Our History
The Seneca congregation's journey began in 1952 with 23 Christians from various cities gathering at Thomas and Audrey Rackley's home. Support from Greenville's Judson Mill congregation, which later became Edgewood Church of Christ, helped the young group of Christians rent a worship space within months.
By 1955, they had constructed their first building on Townville Street in Seneca. From 1969 to 1972, support from an Arkansas congregation enabled Brother Jerry Westmoreland to serve as Seneca's preacher.
Subsequent preachers included Larry Mathis, Randy Smith, Terry Phelps, Adam Richardson, and the current minister, David Langley.
Despite being small in the 1970s and early 1980s, the congregation persevered, bolstered by families like the Phillips, Cannons, and Thompsons, and support from Berry's Chapel congregation in Tennessee.
In 1985, Seneca appointed its first eldership, with Jim Phillips, Bill Cannon. Glenn Shinn, Steve Loftis, Baxter Sowell, Bently Wigley, Ricky Clark, and Skip Haguewood serving over the years. The current elders are Steve Loftis, Bently Wigley, Ricky Clark, and Skip Haguewood. Now, in 2024, the congregation boasts over 150 members, is self-sustaining, and has grown spiritually and numerically. Blessed by God, the Seneca church of Christ supports missionaries, aids other congregations, and meets local community needs. The seed planted in 1952 has grown into a Spiritually vibrant congregation.
